NSG Commando: Role, Training & Eligibility

The National Security Guard (NSG) is one of India’s most elite counter-terrorism forces. Popularly known as the “Black Cats” because of their distinctive black uniform, NSG commandos are deployed in the most critical operations – from counter-terrorism to hostage rescue.

Becoming an NSG commando is the dream of many aspirants, but the path is not direct. Let’s explore the role, selection process, training, salary, and career journey of these brave warriors.

History of the NSG

  • The NSG was established in 1984 after Operation Blue Star and the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
  • Its purpose was to create a special force trained to combat terrorism, hijacking, and hostage situations.
  • NSG functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs and is modeled on special forces like the SAS (UK) and GSG-9 (Germany).
