The age should be between 17 and 25 years as of the date of commencement of the course. The candidate should appear for IMU common entrance test and must pass the test. Merchant Navy is the backbone of International trade, carrying cargo across the globe by various government shipping companies and foreign shipping companies. First of all, there are two departments for the mariner to be posted –the first is the deck and the second Is Engine Department. The student has to clear the IMU-CET test conducted twice in India in the month of December and in the month of May or June. To become a Deck Cadet, the course to be pursued is B.Sc Nautical Science, and to become an Engineer, B.Tech Marine Engineering. It is important to get the sponsorship of the company by appearing for the written test and the interview. In addition to this, the merit of the student is also considered. To become a deck officer, the student has to do either a diploma in Nautical Science of one year or a B.Sc in Nautical Science which is a degree course. On completion of the course, he will get CBC (certificate) and the degree course is for three years. After this course, he has to go for sea service for 18 months as a Deck cadet to become a third officer. If the student gets the Degree, he can become a deck officer and has to go for only 12 months of the sea service and can get the degree on the spot. Only on the completion of the sea service, the student will be able to get the credential for the diploma course or the degree course done otherwise the course done will be wasted.
