The age should be between 17 and 25 years as of the date of commencement of the course. The candidate should appear for IMU common entrance test and must pass the test. The student should be medically fit with the eye sight 6/6 and he should not suffer from color blindness. The IMU(CET) should be cleared in good rank. This exam is a computer-based online exam. The candidate has to obtain a company sponsorship, after a written/online exam followed by an interview by a world-class shipping company to get admission in the above courses.

Merchant Navy is the backbone of International trade, carrying cargo across the globe by various government shipping companies and foreign shipping companies. The import and export of the goods are possible through Merchant Navy only. Men and materials are carried through Merchant Ships.
First of all, there are two departments for the mariner to be posted –the first is the deck and the second Is Engine Department. The student has to clear the IMU-CET test conducted twice in India in the month of December and in the month of May or June. The Course Coordinator Mr Umesh Kuniyal has explained the hierarchical structure of various designations in both the departments and the student can understand how the cadet will be promoted on deck and in the Engine Department. To become a Deck Cadet, the course to be pursued is B.Sc Nautical Science and to be become an Engineer, B.Tech Marine Engineering . It is important to get the sponsorship of the company by appearing for the written test and the interview. In addition to this, the merit of the student is also considered. To become a deck officer, the student has to do either a diploma in Nautical Science of one year or B.Sc Nautical Science which is a degree course. On completion of the course, he will get CBC (certificate) and the degree course is for three years. After this course, he has to go for sea service for 18 months as a Deck cadet to become a third officer. If the student gets the Degree, he can become a deck officer and has to go for only 12 months of the sea service and can get the degree on the spot. Only on the completion of the sea service , the student will be able to get the credential for the diploma course done or the degree course done otherwise the course done will be wasted.
To become a marine engineer, a student has to clear the IMU(CET) Exam to get admission in B.Tech Marine four-year degree course in DG shipping approved institutions and IMU affiliated colleges. Company sponsorship will be provided in the college only in the last year of the study course. Some reputed world-class shipping companies are Fleet Management, Univan/Maersk/Great Eastern/Williamson, Shipping Corporation of India, ESM, and Scorpio. Before taking admission in DG shipping institutions and reputed colleges, the student has to clear the exam of the companies and worldwide interview and have to qualify IMU(CET). The next is General Cargo to carry foods, pipes, electrical, steel sheets etc.

The next is the Crude Cargo Carrier which carries oil and has a heating system so that the oil cannot get frozen. These are called Chemical tankers. The next is Passenger Ships which have a capacity to carry 2000 passengers having accommodation like five-star hotels, restaurants, etc. Merchant Navy is operating around the world and in India which is surrounded by sea on all three sides so in India also there are many renowned companies offering the cadets the opportunity to be mariners. The life of the mariner is full of adventure and the mariner enjoys traveling around the world and can provide a more luxurious life to family as the earnings are really good. Many facilities of free travel to family members and other allowances make life really exciting for the entire family. Higher and sooner increments of wages on promotion to higher rank and insurance to the mariner and family are some of the advantages. The accommodation on board in the ship is also free for the family. The family can be kept.
