NDA Exam: Complete Guide to Syllabus, Dates, Eligibility & Preparation

The National Defence Academy (NDA) Exam is one of India’s most prestigious competitive exams conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It opens the gateway for students who aspire to serve the nation as commissioned officers in the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force. This page provides a complete NDA overview — eligibility, exam pattern, syllabus, preparation tips, and coaching guidance from Doon Defence Academy.

What is NDA Exam?

The NDA Exam is a national-level examination organized twice every year by UPSC. It aims to select eligible candidates for training at the National Defence Academy (Pune) and Naval Academy (Ezhimala). After completing their rigorous training, cadets are commissioned as officers in the Armed Forces. The NDA exam not only tests academic knowledge but also measures a candidate’s aptitude, reasoning, and leadership qualities — the core elements of military excellence.

Appearing for NDA is the first real step for young patriots who wish to wear the uniform and serve India. It gives them an opportunity to join the armed forces directly after Class 12 and become part of the world’s finest military academies. The NDA experience transforms boys and girls into leaders of discipline, courage, and integrity.

NDA Exam Pattern & Syllabus

The NDA written test is divided into two papers — Mathematics and the General Ability Test (GAT). Both are objective-type papers conducted on the same day. Understanding the syllabus thoroughly helps aspirants focus their preparation effectively.

Mathematics – 300 Marks

This section tests problem-solving ability and mathematical accuracy. Topics include Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Probability, Statistics, and Analytical Geometry. A strong understanding of concepts from Classes 11 and 12 is essential.

General Ability Test – 600 Marks

Part A (English – 200 marks): Grammar, Vocabulary, Comprehension, and Sentence Improvement.
Part B (General Knowledge – 400 marks): Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, and Current Events.

The total written exam is of 900 marks followed by the SSB Interview (900 marks). Candidates should focus on both academic preparation and personality development to succeed in all stages.
